Two Poems

I Must Become

I must become
another person or a machine
gun I must become
fertile soil. The sun
hung above our bodies
firing choking screams:
Another person, another person,
I must become!

On Awakening

We see the two of us

In the field like oxen.

The mourning doves

Bear the tortured war

In the field like oxen,

We see the two of us.
