Among the many events being hosted on campus this week, here are three vastly different, but equally important (and interesting) ones:
Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 28th, Economics professors Jamee Moudud, Marilyn Power, Kim Christensen, and Frank Roosevelt will come together to present Teach-In on The Current Economic Crisis. Moderated by junior Vera Kelsey-Watts, the educational presentations promise to be diverse, with titles ranging from “Capitalism in Crisis, Credit, and the State: Roots of the Current Free Market Orthodoxy” to “Bailouts and Life Preservers: Proposals for Restoring Confidence and Prosperity.” Whether you’re about to enter the now-disconcerting job market or simply interested in the impending state of our nation, all are welcome and encouraged to attend. The event will take place from 1:30 to 3 pm in Heimbold 202.
Tomorrow night, many will gather in the PAC’s Cannon Theater for SLC’s yearly tribute to the best and brightest poetic voices across time. The 7th Annual Dead Poets Slam—featuring students performing the words of Anne Sexton, William Carlos Williams, Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg, and more in a theatrical context—looks to be engaging, enlightening, and fun. There are two shows, one at 8 pm and one at 10 pm, and seating is general, so get there early for a good view.
And finally, to shamelessly plug, on Wednesday, October 29th, Sadie Lou will be hosting guest speakers and SLC alums Jennifer Liebman and Alexis Turner. From Internet copyright and privacy laws, to web-based creative submissions processes, from the Internet as an outlet for the media, to the idea of blogging and what that entails, Liebman (a legal fellow with the Media Law Resource Center Institute) and Turner (Webmaster for Greenwood Publishing and a freelance web designer) will tell you everything you ever wanted and needed to know about Internet journalism. The event will be held in Titsworth Lecture Hall, from 6 to 7 pm, and is part of the First Amendment Speakers’ Bureau.
