Student Activities Subcommittee (SAS) Meeting: 11/3

Budget Presentations

A. Lit Review Presentation

a. Durga: This is a campaign to get people to submit to the Lit Review with bringing back the annual “friends reading friends” event. The budget is to get some refreshments so we can get a bit more of a draw.

b. Hayleigh: I’m going to open up a call list

c. Kara: Why don’t you have to have it catered through Flik?

d. Durga: I don’t know, actually. But we’ve never catered from them before.

B. Swing Dance Club Presentation: Naomi Murphy

a. Naomi: We have a swing dance club and we want an instructor. He charges $100/lesson

b. Lindsey: Have you hired this instructor before? And what was the turnout

c. Naomi: Yes, he came last week. There were 15-20 people who came.

d. Kara: So this is a flat fee?

e. Naomi: Yes, there is no cap on the class

f. Kara: Have you considered talking to the gym about having this as a possible PE credit

g. Naomi: No

C. Environmental Studies Presentation: Ben O’Clair

a. Ben: We want to bring Dan Hoyle to perform a one-man show. He was a Fulbright scholar who went to Nigeria and the end result of spending a year there was his show. The proposal is last-minute but we only just found out he’s coming to the east coast.

b. Elizabeth: So you said the theater program is giving $500. So you’re asking us for $1000?

c. Ben: Well he agreed to come here for $1500 but we were hoping to cover his airfare

d. Maddie: So ballpark figure, how much would that be?

e. Ben: About $300

D. Science is Fun! Presentation

a. Jasmine: So this budget is for our first meeting. And our sponsor suggested the idea of making our own ice cream. So these are all the ingredients plus a few toppings.

b. Elizabeth: How many people do you had in your club?

c. Jasmine: We don’t have an actual list yet but we were going to make a facebook group.

d. Maddie: Would Scott Calvin be attending the meeting as a supervisor?

e. Jasmine: yes

2. Presentation Deliberations

A. Lit Review Deliberatino

a. Elizabeth: I think this is reasonable. I think we should fund in full

b. Lily: I motion to fund in full. Seconded. No Objections.

c. Hayleigh: Raise your hand if you are in favor of this motion

B. Swing Dance Club Deliberation

a. Pam: I think this is reasonable

b. Elizabeth: I agree, however I feel we’ve contradicted ourselves since we did not fund for the gospel choir and we did fund the sign language club. So I think we contradicted ourselves on some grounds.

c. Eliot: I think her estimate of 15-20 people is a little small. It was more like 20-30 people. With the gospel choir, though, he’d been doing it for free for a while. IF I remember correctly.

d. Naomi: he said his general rate for a group lesson is $100. He’s not requesting for transportation.

e. Maddie: I agree with Elizabeth that we’ve be inconsistent

f. Lily: I think it’s a good thing but we should be cautious about how many teachers we fund and for what amount of money. We can’t afford to fund every club a teacher. So I feel conflicted.

g. Durga: I motion to fund in full. Seconded. Objection.

h. Hayleigh: We’re going to continue the discussion

i. Lily: I understand what you’re saying but I feel like this could be a PE class or some student here could teach it.

j. Naomi: I asked the PE department and students who were dance thirds so I did some research.

k. Kara: I just want to remind everyone that we don’t pay students to teach and I doubt we could find anyone who would volunteer.

l. Elizabeth: I call the question

m. Maddie: The question has been called. If you want to end discussion, raise your hand <3 yes 1 no> I get to vote. I vote to discontinue

n. Hayleigh: All those who want to vote on voting, raise your hand <3 yes> those who want to discuss more < 4 no>

o. Eliot: We did not fund the Baby Burlesque troop because they wanted to go off campus but we said we’d encourage them to do it off campus.

Durga: There are 30 people who are interested and if we don’t have this class then people won’t be able to dance.

q. Lily: I want this to happen, I just think we need to look at it in a more broad spectrum

r. Elizabeth: If we funded this and the club was aware that SAS was spending $700 then there would be a diligent effort for people to attend

s. Durga: It’s a lot to ask a student to ask to do something pro-bono. And I think it’s weird that we’re talking about a particular student. I think it’s up to us to fund this.

t. Maddie: I think it’s a great opportunity. I think the inconsistency is problematic and something we need to continue to evaluate. I’m going to motion to fund $699. Seconded. No Objections.

u. Hayleigh: I’m going to take a vote. All those in favor raise your hand <5 yes 1 abstention>. Passes. So we are funding $699 to the Swing Club.

C. Environmental Studies Deliberation

a. Elizabeth: I think it’s shitty that the other school won’t pay for the airfare if he comes here

b. Kara: If there is anything in the Environmental Studies Budget I’m guessing we could scrape the bottom of the barrel for the $300.

c. Elizabeth: People can also have bake sales

d. Durga: Could we propose that Warren Green to raise money

e. Hayleigh: It’s not their responsibility

f. Maddie: It’s a really interesting proposal and it sounds like it would be really well-attended.

g. Josh: Recently, it’s come up about faculty bringing things to students to present for funding is a little shady and should be taken into consideration. It’s pretty easy to figure out if a student is or is not involved in the cause.

h. Lily: I agree. Also, it’s important to think about what Maddie said . It’s relevant and I think it would be a good idea to fund this event. Is there any money anywhere else?

i. Kara: Josh, do you know what budget departments have what money? Because we have no sense of what those budgets look like.

j. Maddie: if whoever is running the event wanted to ask Warren Green for their cooperation in fund raising, they would do it.

k. Elizabeth: I motion to fund $1000. Seconded. No objections

l. Hayleigh: All those in favor, raise your hand. Passes

D. Science is Fun! Deliberation

a. Elizabeth: I think it’s great. I motion to fund in full. Seconded. No objections.

b. Hayleigh: So we’re going to take a roll-call vote This passes.
