Bylaw Subcommittee Meeting 11/12/08

Bylaw Subcommittee meets every other Wednesday from 5:45-7 in Bates Meeting Room. Our meetings are open. Feel free to email studentsenate@gm.slc.edu with bylaw amendment suggestions or to check when our next meeting will be.

Present: Kara Rota, Aiden Bussey, Angelina Duell, Madison Schramm

This week, we discussed a bylaw amendment that would standardly require a training process for the next year’s Parliamentarian and SSSF chair that are elected in the spring by the present year’s Parliamentarian and SSSF chair. This process is already in place in the bylaws for the Treasurer position.

We also talked about listing the two SSSF positions separately in the bylaw list of Senate members. This way, we could specify that one SSSF Senator needs to be available for and attend Student Life meetings, while the other SSSF Senator does not.

We also discussed who should choose the trainer for and organize the anti-oppression training required of Senators by our bylaws. As the bylaws stand currently, club chairs play a large role in choosing the trainer. We discussed whether Natalie Gross may be in a better position to help find an organization or trainer, but wanted to be sensitive to the fact that the anti-oppression training is for and about students and students should have a large role in choosing a trainer.

Lastly, we talked about the problem that occurs when student workers whose wages are paid by Student Senate, i.e. student space managers and editors of publications, sign contracts and often begin these jobs before Senate provides funding for the budgets of their wages. Aiden is going to draft a proposed amendment that would require the budgeting for those wages to be done by Senate in the prior Spring.

Senate meets on Tuesdays from 1:30-3:30 in Bates Meeting Room. To schedule a time to come, email the Senate Chair.

Submit budget proposals for consideration through our online system.
