New York City Events for the Week of November 17th
Monday, November 17: Mondays always seem to be a popular day in New York to go discover a new, hip, young band. Today is no different. The band Pink Spiders along with Mondo Primo and Cruiserweight are playing together for as little as $10 at the Knitting Factory. Get there at 7 pm to see the show. Knitting Factory Tap Bar, 74 Leonard St. between Church St. and Broadway, Manhattan.
Tuesday, November 18: So for all of you that are interested in science, politics, the energy crisis, and New York City, you might want to check out this free seminar entitled Urban Agenda for the New York City Apollo Alliance Presents: New York City’s Energy Future. Yeah, it is a mouthful, but upon attending you should also have an earful of useful information! Registration begins at 8:30 am at the IUPAT District Council 9 Headquarters, 45 W. 14th St. on the 2nd floor.
Wednesday, November 19: I am sure that if any of you really love AC/DC then you probably already know that they are having a concert today! But if you had no idea, and still really want to attend, tickets are pretty expensive this late in the game ($89). Still, if you are in the city and like people watching, you might want to check it out anyway. And, in an odd turn of events, this in New Jersey, not New York, at the Izod Center Continental Airlines Arena at 50 Rte. 120, East Rutherford, NJ 07073.
Thursday, November 20: The Klezmershack Calender, a site that brings “Jewish music events around the world,” brings NYC a “Cool Jew” launching with Sarah Aroeste and more. The event is free and claims to be the “ultimate guide for every member of the tribe with Jewish Rock Showcase.” Sounds pretty awesome. The event takes place at 7:30 pm at JCC of Manhattan, 334 Amsterdam Ave. at W. 76th St.
Friday, November 21: The first of many Thanksgiving events appears today. The Turkey Trot Dance, showcasing DJ Light on Staten Island, starts at 7 pm and goes till 9 pm. There will be refreshments and a raffle (perhaps to win a turkey). Blood Root Valley, Greenbelt Recreation Center, 501 Brielle Avenue,
Staten Island. Call (718) 667-3545 for information.
Saturday, November 22: The closing reception for Anne Diggory’s recent showing at the Blue Mountain Gallery is happening today from 2 pm to 4 pm. Her work features painted streams that mimic the passage of water around stones quite realistically. Blue Mountain Gallery, 530 W. 25th St. in Chelsea, Manhattan.
Sunday, November 23: So you’re in the city mid-day today and you want something fun to do. Well, you’re in luck. There is a double film screening at 92Y Tribeca featuring two films revolving around Mexican heritage. It should be really interesting! Each film is 98 minutes long. The screening starts at 1 pm at 92YTribeca, 200 Hudson St. at Canal St., Manhattan.
Remember: If going into the city on a Saturday or Sunday, SLC students can sign up for the Met Van, which is free and drops off/picks up riders in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Van leaves Andrews Parking Lot at 11 am and 1 pm both days, and students can sign up outside the Student Affairs office (2nd floor of Bates).
