We discussed briefly the role of Dons and the structure of FYS classes. As the college has been trying to make FYS courses spread across all disciplines, we discussed how to maintain having a rigorous, writing intensive, yet supportive class, in departments like the Visual Arts. There is the potential for a photography FYS studies class next year, and we discussed how a photo class (which relies heavily on studio time) would be able to adequately prepare students for their future studies at SLC, which will no doubt be writing intensive.
We devoted to majority of our meeting to discussing the upcoming Strategic Planning open meeting with the community. Several members of curriculum committee will be sitting on the panel, (me, 2 faculty, various deans) and we discussed the findings from the community wide survey set out earlier this year.
We are hoping the meeting will be productive, and that the community at large will bring positive suggestions and feedback for where the college will be going, as we feel we have adequate (or at least a lot) of data about what is not working.
Please plan on coming out, there will be an opportunity for any and all to speak, and say whatever you want.
