SAS January 26

The regular weekly meeting of SAS was held in Bates Meeting Room B. Rebecca was present and taking minutes.

Attendance: Hayleigh, Lily, Josh, Eliot, Neil, Durga, Lindsey

Budget Presentations
Budget 1:Griot’s Gather Club
Neil: Did you have people come to the events you did not previously ask for funding for
Aja: We had most of the club members, about 30 people. This club is usually a very intimate setting most of the time anyway.
Lily: I know Friday night cabaret is in Titsworth, did you book the space already?
Aja: Yes, we already booked the space

Budget 2: CATS Club for Ninjasonik and Babysquad
Maggie: This would be a really fun way to publicize CATS and just come and have a good time.
Hayleigh: Questions?
Lindsey: What kind of music are the bands?
Maggie: It’s indie-punk. Ninkasonik is mainly hip hop.
Josh: Have you booked the blue room yet?
Maggie: I sent in a proposal and haven’t gotten a response yet. We’ve been talking to down stage and would prefer to have the show there.

Budget 3: American Sign Language Club
Margaret: So we’re asking for funding for a deaf teacher this semester. We got funded last semester and we have some leftover funds so we’re asking for a bit less. We’re having our first class on Thursday and we’re going to see how many people are going to continue this semester then.
Eliot: What was the class size last semester
Margaret: 10-12 people

Budget 4: FLUID
Dakota: Since this time last year, i’ve been trying to bring Erika MacDonald to campus. She is a performer who focuses on gender presentation. I’ve read her script and seen her perform online and we’ve talked a lot about her performance. It is a collage piece of funny rap songs about sexuality and a coming-of-age story about who she really is. She is interested in performing for college- age students.
Hayleigh: Any questions?
Lindsey: Is the total you present here all you expect to get for us? Which film viewing room?
Dakota: Yes, the rest of the money I’m getting from elsewhere. The room directly under the bookstore.
Durga: Have you thought about any students doing a performance or something to have the club more actively involved in this event?
Dakota: I have. I’m definitely going to advertise throughout all the identity group clubs.

Budget 5: Harambee Club
Sara: Harambee is the black student union on campus. This year, i was hoping to bring Harambee outside of common ground and also outside of Sarah Lawrence by taking them to the Yale solidarity conference. It is a weekend-long conference.
Neil: Is this a registration fee?
Sara: Yes. For housing and meals.
Lily: How are you getting there?
Sara: I haven’t quite decided that yet. We could take a van. I was going to discuss is with the rest of Harambee. I’m just asking senate for a registration fee.
Lindsey: These 12 people can definitely attend?
Sara: Yes.
Durga: Funding students to go somewhere else is always a discussion. Did you have any ideas that came up for what you could do to incorperate students on campus?
Sara: I definitely agree and will take that suggestion.

Budget Deliberations

Budget 1: Griot’s Gather Club- Simply Kat
Durga: I don’t have an issue with this budget. Griot’s Gathering has proven that they can have events that are publicized and with good attendence.
Eliot: I agree with Durga. I motion to fund in full. Seconded
Hayleigh: Everyone in favor, raise your hand. Funded in full

Budget 2: CATS Club for Ninjasonik and Babysquad
Lily: This event sounds awesome.
Josh: The blue room has been booked for this space, but it has not been funded yet.
Maggie: Down space is definitely an option. I’ve been in communication with them.
Lindsey: I’m not sure of the necessity of 2 bands. Is Babysquad going to add anything to this?
Eliot: if nothing else, it fosters relationships with other schools
Maggie: Ninjasonik wanted to play a show with Babysquad
Lily: i motion to fund in full. Seconded. No objections.
Budget 3: American Sign Language Club
Lindsey: This club has consistent attendance. I motion to fund in full
Hayleigh: Objections? None Funded in full

Budget 4: FLUID
Durga: I would encourage student participation in the performance. I know you’ve been really wanting her to come so that’s a priority to you. We should fund this but perhaps with a friendly amendment to reach out to other student groups to perform. I don’t know if that would infringe on the time or the space.
Dakota: I agree. I understand the importance of having student participation of events of this nature. I have been talking to the chair of QVC and we were talking about having bake sales and getting other clubs involved with eachother. I just can’t promise anything right now reguarding this performance but I will certainly try. Time certainly is a constraint.
Josh: While suggestions are nice, we are not here to plan events. So this is a proposal and you are here to fund or not fund events. Just be careful.
Lily: I think this is going to be fund. i motion to fund in full. Seconded. No objections. < unanimous yes>

Budget 5: Harambee Club
Lily: This is an amazing opportunity for Harambee. I know we’ve had funding for off-campus events for clubs. I really worry about the exclusivity of this event.
Sara: The people who have chosen to be a part of this club i feel should be able to have this experience. I know that it’s expensive. As Durga suggested, I would definitely be interested in having a post-experience SLC event.
Neil: Before you guys came in, i was hesitant to fund this but you’ve showed that you know how to put things together. The only thing that I would say you should try, if there’s anyone who can afford to register not dependent upon our funding, you should encourage that so you can bring more people. I move to fund in full.
Seconded
